Artist Critique
This painting
was created by famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. The painting is called “Viva
la Vida” it is an oil painting created in 1954. In the picture you can see it
is mostly watermelons. There’s a lot of greens and reds in the painting for the
watermelons. The painting is mostly circles and a few pointed edges. The background
has a light blue and a light blue. The painting is not symmetrical, there’s
watermelons with different sizes and they’re cut in different ways.
The background
has a light and a dark blue, it seems that there was reason for the artist to
do this, to contrast both sides. The major figure in this painting is are the
watermelon, but there seem to one that stands out the most, which is the
watermelon in the middle. It is darker than rest and it seems to have some
shine to it, it seems the artist intended for that watermelon to be the focal
point in the painting. The paint also includes watermelons that are cut open
and which some are a darker red than others. The watermelons seem to take up
the most space in the painting.
I feel like in
this painting the artist was trying to represent life through these watermelons.
I feel like the dark green water melon represents life when you’re new to the
world and when you’re young and life seems to be perfect and caring. Then, the
cut watermelons represent life as you’re growing up. I feel like they’re meant
to represent that life isn’t easy and you encounter a lot of problems and
sometimes you may not feel full, full as a person. The dark and light blue in
the background could represent the good and the evil in life. But in the end
you end up finding yourself when you’re old which is represented by the
watermelon in the back, the one that’s full and old looking.
In my opinion I
really do like this painting. It is filled bright reds and greens. Filled with
different shapes and sizes. And I like it because of what I feel like it
represents.
